biography
German filmmaker Erich Engel began directing films in the early 1930s. Prior to that he had been a producer of plays, most notably Bertolt Brecht's Threepenny Opera in 1928. Engel continued making films through the end of WW II. After the war he moved to East Germany. His son Thomas Engel also became a director.
