  • Was high school valedictorian and played the saxophone in the marching band.
  • Attended UNC on a drama scholarship, but dropped out to pursue a career in music. Received an honorary doctorate degree from Berklee College of Music in 2009.
  • Began singing in folk clubs in Greenwich Village.
  • The 1991 album Emmylou Harris and the Nash Ramblers at the Ryman and the accompanying TV special were responsible for the subsequent renovation of the famed building, once home to the Grand Ole Opry.
