American screenwriter Edwin Justus Mayer penned the scripts for many silent and sound films. A native of New York City, Mayer had little formal education. Still, he managed to become both a journalist and a playwright before moving to Hollywood in the late '20s to work as a press representative for Sam Goldwyn. His job led him to write screenplays for a few silent films. Later, Mayer became known for writing urbane comedies for Paramount.
