The eldest of the four acting Flugrath sisters, Edna Flugrath danced with the Anna Pavlova company before being chosen premiere danseuse with the Chicago Opera. By the early 1910s, she had become a movie actress with the pioneering Edison company and married one of her leading men, Harold M. Shaw. Together, they toured South Africa before settling in London, England, where they enjoyed some popularity as the stars of the London Film Co. Returning to Hollywood at the outbreak of war in Europe, the couple made 11 moderately successful melodramas, Edna as the leading lady and Harold directing. Sadly, Shaw was killed in a car accident in 1926 and Flugrath retired from films to run a Hollywood fashion boutique. She had never enjoyed the wide popularity of younger sisters Viola Dana and Shirley Mason. The fourth sister, Leonie Flugrath, was primarily a stage performer.
