Australian cinematographer Donald McAlpine learned the rudiments of his business with the Commonwealth Film Unit in the 1960s. The 1972 comedy feature The Adventures of Barry McKenzie launched McAlpine's longtime collaboration with director Bruce Beresford, which extended into the 1980s and such major releases as Breaker Morant (1980) and King David (1985). Before transferring his base of operations to the U.S., McAlpine worked with other notable Australian filmmakers like George T. Miller (Man from Snowy River) and Gillian Armstrong (My Brilliant Career). In Hollywood, he frequently worked with director Paul Mazursky; films emerging from this professional association include Moscow on the Hudson (1984),Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1985) and Moon Over Parador (1986). Donald McAlpine's 1990s credits include the box-office hits Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), A Clear and Present Danger (1994) and 9 Months (1995); and the updated "barrio" version of Romeo and Juliet (1996).
