biography
One of America's earliest screen actors, Charles Insley (or, as it was sometimes given, Charles Inslee) had appeared with Edison, Bison, Kalem, and Biograph (where he specialized in playing Native Americans) before landing with the Western Essanay in 1915. A member of Charles Chaplin's stock company in Niles, CA, Insley played irate characters in such legendary comedies as Work, The Bank, and A Night in the Show (all 1915). His post-Chaplin work was sporadic but as late as 1928, he was filming with a Universal company in the Hawaiian islands. Insley's screen career ended prior to sound.
