biography
Brest debuted as a writer/director in 1977 with the American Film Institute-sponsored comedy/drama Hot Tomorrows. The following year he scored a hit with the caper tale Going in Style. In the 1980s he acted in Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Spies Like Us, and helmed the box-office smash Beverly Hills Cop. Brest's successes as a producer/director are Midnight Run with Robert De Niro and Scent of a Woman with Al Pacino.
