Russian-born art director Boris Leven was first a painter and designer before coming to Hollywood in 1933 as a sketch artist for Paramount. Three years later he began working for Fox where he was noted for his ability to design sets for a wide variety of film genres ranging from westerns, to sci-fi films, to musicals. In 1961, Leven won an Oscar for his work on West Side Story. He frequently worked with director Martin Scorsese.
