Garnering the nickname Jumpin' Bill Carlisle for his electric on-stage performances, this rollicking country/comedy star made a name for himself in the Grand Ole Opry later in his career, in addition to making a handful of memorable film appearances. Born in Wakefield, KY, in December 1908, Carlisle teamed with brother Cliff to form The Carlisle Brothers, a popular duo in the 1930s. Quickly gaining a reputation as a wild man by leaping into the air and throwing things during his performances, it wasn't long before a series of novelty tunes turned Carlisle into a successful solo artist. Penning the classic "No Help Wanted" after being rejected from the Grand Ole Opry, Carlisle was seen in such features as 1966's The Gold Guitar. Elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2002, Carlisle died in Nashville on March 17, 2003. He was 94.
