Spanish director César Ardavín entered the film industry as an assistant for his uncle and started directing short films in the early '50s. He devoted the bulk of his career to making short art documentaries during the '60s, '70s, and '80s. His best-known feature, Lazarillo de Tormes (aka The Blindman's Guide to Tormes), was an adaptation of a classic novel for which Ardavín won a Golden Bear at the 1960 Berlin Film Festival. Ardavín is the son of painter César Fernández-Ardavín and the nephew of filmmaker Eusebio Fernández-Ardavín. He is also the nephew of playwright Luis Fernández-Ardavín.
