Antonio Román on AllMovie

During the 1940s, Antonio Román was Spain's most esteemed and honored filmmaker (and is not to be confused with Italian director Mario Bava, who occasionally used the pseudonym Antonio Roman). Román originally studied pharmacy in Madrid, but after developing an interest in film became a respected critic who wrote for some of Spain's most distinguished movie journals. Beginning in 1934, Román made a few short documentaries. Román directed his first feature film, Escuadrilla/Squadron, in 1941 under the supervision of Sáenz de Heredia. His subsequent films of the '40s include Lola Montes (1944) and La Fuentovejuna (1947). Following the end of the war, Román continued writing movie reviews and directing films through the '60s; he additionally managed the Cooperativa Cinematográfica Castilla.
